Scalp Micro Pigmentation

Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is a permanent cosmetic ‘tattoo’ that mimics the very short hairs of a closely shaved scalp and camouflages the appearance of thinning hair in both men and women. It is a new and innovative technique that offers an alternative styling option for those who do not want or are not candidates for hair transplant surgery and an alternative to messy and time consuming concealers

SMP is used for a variety of scalp conditions that include: genetic androgenic alopecia (AGA) otherwise known as male pattern balding (MPB), scarring alopecia’s from a variety of autoimmune diseases of the scalp (e.g. alopecia areata, alopecia totalis), and scarring from neurosurgical procedures or burns. It is also used to manage the unnatural appearance that is associated with outdated hair transplant procedures. This is a non-surgical procedure carried out by experienced hair restoration surgeons and qualified staff.  The SMP procedure is performed under local anesthesia for your comfort.

SMP is a great adjunct to hair transplant surgery by creating a thicker look to the transplanted area. Today’s hair transplant surgery can create a completely natural appearance using your own hair to provide fullness in thinning areas. SMP adds to the look of fullness by reducing the contrast between your scalp and your hair color. It is used to dramatically reduce the appearance of scars on the scalp including those that form from ‘strip harvesting’ and other surgeries.

Camouflage Thinning Hair

We have performed SMP on women, but we are cautious when it comes to women because we want to know the cause of the hair loss or hair thinning. With men, 99% have hair loss or hair thinning from genetic causes in a typical balding pattern (MPB), but women may have balding due to many medical conditions and we would want to diagnose them prior to offering the SMP treatment. As ethical physicians, we want to be sure that we do not perform this process on women who have potentially reversible baldness from hormonal causes, thyroid or autoimmune diseases.

Once we are satisfied that you do not have a disease that is causing your balding or thinning, then we can go forward with treating it. The results on women require us to set realistic expectations with the patient.

Scar Concealment

For men who will consider a shaved look, the scalp micropigmentation process is ideal. It can hide many scalp deformities such as the old corn-rows, scalp reduction scars and scars from hair transplant strip surgeries. We have treated patients who have scars from a variety of diseases such as Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, Scaring Alopecia, etc..  It is always said that a single pictures equals 1000 words, and once you search for the doctors, you will see their before and after photos on their personal websites.

Camouflages Balding Pattern with A Shaved Head Look

For men who are willing to shave their head, we can mimic the look of a shaved scalp with scalp micro-pigmentation.  This requires that the person having this procedure, commit to maintaining the shaved look throughout his life as areas where balding is present will be blended into areas where there is no balding.
